Science for Breakfast Invitation to Teachers

                   March 15, 2006

Dear Principal and Science Colleague,

The New Jersey Academy of Science in partnership with Richard Stockton College of New Jersey are sponsoring “Science for Breakfast”, a special program that promotes career discussions between high school science students and professional scientists.  This event will be held on Saturday, April 22, 2006, at the G-wing Cafeteria at Richard Stockton College in Pomona, NJ, from 9:00 am to12:00 noon.  The program Features a presentation, "Science at the ends of the earth: journeys to the land of fire and the black smokers, " by Dr. Dan Hernandez and Dr. Tara Harmer, Stockton College. The event. provides high school students in New Jersey, especially those interested in pursuing careers in science, an opportunity to interact with professional scientists and researchers representing various fields of science, technology, research, and development.  Areas of science to be featured include biology, chemistry, physics, environmental science, marine science, biochemistry, mathematics and medicine, to name a few.  Scientists and researchers share many aspects of what is involved in becoming a scientist in these fields, along with information on the varied career paths available in the sciences.  In some cases, informal discussions have led the science participants to play an active mentoring role for the student attendees beyond the meeting.

Students, scientists, and researchers are invited to participate in informal, roundtable discussions, while enjoying a wholesome and nutritious breakfast.  Science for Breakfast is free to all participants.  Teachers must nominate interested students.  Nominated students must register on-line at www.njas.org.  All nominations must be received by Friday, Apil 8, 2006, to receive full consideration.  A copy of the nomination form is available on the NJ Academy of Science website.  Additional information is also available by calling the NJAS office at (732) 463-0511.

Finally, if you are not already a member of the New Jersey Academy of Science, I invite you to join this organization.  Members receive a variety of benefits including opportunities to participate in national science meetings, an annual research symposium, and access to internships and science facilities.  For more information about membership, please contact the New Jersey Academy of Science office or download an application form from the NJAS website located at www.njas.org.
