Science for Breakfast Information

NJAS' Science for Breakfast program takes is roots from the highly successful AAAS program, Breakfast with Scientists. This event, held in various locations throughout the state, is held several times each academic year.It is directed at high school students interested in exploring the possibility of pursuing careers in science. Breakfast table discussions with Professional Scientists from Industry and/or Government and Academic Researchers focus on the various aspects of their specific scientific career. In an informal setting, students query professionals about anything that could help them make a decision to pursue a career in science. Often questions range from, “How much do you make?” to “What preliminary courses would you recommend?” Students rarely fail to surprise guest professionals!

The last Science for Breakfast was held on Saturday, May 21, 2005 at DeVry University's North Brunswick Campus (driving directions). The program commenced at 9:00 AM.

Featured areas of science included biology, chemistry, physics, environmental science, marine science, biochemistry, biotechnology, civil/geotechnical engineering, psychology and medicine, to name a few. Scientists and researchers shared many aspects of what is involved in becoming a scientist in these fields, along with information on the varied career paths available in the sciences. In some cases, informal discussions have led the science participants to play an active mentoring role for the student attendees beyond the meeting.
